How Much Car Insurance Do I Need?

When deciding on a car insurance policy, there are a lot of coverage options from which to choose. Some are essential, or even mandated by law, while others provide coverage that you may not need. This guide will help you get started in determining what type of policy is right for you by reviewing some of the more common types of auto insurance coverage

Essential coverage

  • Liability coverage  – Covers bodily injury and property damage to others if you are at-fault in an accident.
  • Collision coverage  – Pays for damage to your vehicle regardless of who is at fault.
  • Comprehensive coverage  – Covers damage to your vehicle that is not caused by a collision.

Important coverage

  • Medical payments coverage  – Pays for medical expenses if you or your passengers are injured in a crash.
  • Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage  – Can cover medical or car repair bills if you’re hit by an uninsured or underinsured motorist.
  • Accidental death – This policy pays a predetermined amount of money in the event of accidental death resulting from an accident.

Optional coverage

  • Loan/lease coverage – Also referred to as 'gap protection,' loan/lease coverage pays the difference between what you owe and what a vehicle is worth if it's totaled.
  • Loss of use – May help pay for a rental car if your car is disabled due to a covered loss.

Keep in mind that these are just general descriptions, and they can vary greatly by state.  Also, not all car insurance coverage options are available in every state.  Ask your insurance agent to discuss your insurance options when creating or modifying your policy.
